- Incredible Bharat
Uttarakhand is called the land of gods. It is believed that by visiting Char Dham located in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, a seeker attains salvation. In Hindu scriptures, the special importance of visiting Char Dham i.e. Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri has been mentioned. So let us know when the Char Dham Yatra is going to start this year.
Importance of Char Dham Yatra
According to the scriptures, by visiting Char Dham all the sins of a person are destroyed. At the same time, that person also becomes free from the cycle of birth and death. Such a person does not have to take birth again in the mortal world and he attains salvation. An interesting fact about the Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand is that it is not the first of its name.
As surprising as it may sound, the one that takes place in Uttarakhand is actually the Chhota Chardham Yatra, what translates into the shorter version of the Chardham Yatra. The original Chardham refers to the four holy sites situated in four different corners of the country, established by Adi Shankaracharya back in the eighth century AD. The places he had established as the Chardham were Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram, and Dwarka. However, a smaller circuit of the pilgrimage was made out of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in the Indian Himalayas of Uttarakhand.
Importance of the four shrines
The starting point of the Chardham Yatra is Haridwar, from where pilgrims begin their journey to the four holy shrines. First, they visit Yamunotri, then to the famous Gangotri, followed by the Kedarnath Dham, and finally they go to the pilgrimage at the Badrinath Dham. There are reasons why such a sequence is followed in the Chardham Yatra, and also each of these four shrines has its own significance attached to it.
Char Dham Yatra 2024 opening date
Yamunotri – Start date – 10th May 2024 from 8:30 am
Starting with the Yamunotri Dham, it is situated at a place which is the source of River Yamuna. In Hindu mythology, since Yamuna is the sister of Yamraj, he had promised her on Bhai Dooj that whoever takes a dip in the river will not be taken to Yamlok and will thus attain salvation. The shrine here seats Goddess Yamuna, and it is the westernmost pilgrimage of the Garhwal region in Uttarakhand. Yamunotri is located in the Western Garhwal Himalaya in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. This is the first stop of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Yamuna River is also one of the sacred rivers. In Hinduism, Yamuna is known as the daughter of Lord Surya and sister of Lord Yama. Char Dham Yatra is considered incomplete without visiting this holy place.
Gangotri – Start time – 10th May 2024 from 9:30 am
Located at an altitude of 3,200 m above sea level, the Gangotri Dham is located at Gomukh, which is believed to be the source of the River Ganga. Since River Ganga is considered as the source of sanctity and purity, pilgrims take a dip here in order to wash away their sins and embrace the goodness instead. According to legends, when King Bhagirath meditated for a long time, it was then that River Ganga came into being. The stone on which he is believed to have meditated still lies as a sacred place near the Ganga Temple in Gangotri. Gangotri is the origin place of the river Ganga. Ganga River originates from the Gangotri glacier in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Ganga is considered one of the most sacred rivers of India because according to mythological belief, Ganga ji came to earth for the welfare of all mankind. In such a situation, Gangotri is also an important stop of Char Dham Yatra. There is a popular belief about this Dham that whoever visits this place during his Char Dham Yatra, all his troubles are destroyed.
Kedarnath: Start Date – 10th May 2024, 07 AM onwards
The Kedarnath Dham has so much of significance among the pilgrims because it is not only one of the most important shrines of the Chardham Yatra but this ancient shrine is also considered to be one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Besides, Kedarnath, along with Kalpeshwar, Tungnath, Madmaheshwar, and Rudranath shrines together make the Panch Kedar. Kedarnath Temple is located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. According to mythological beliefs, this temple was built by the Pandavas. Kedarnath Dham is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is believed that Lord Shiva rests here. There are two mountains here, which are known as Nar and Narayan. It is believed that one should visit Badrinath Dham only after visiting Kedarnath Dham. Only then does a person get the full benefits of the journey.
Badrinath – Start date – 12 May 2024 from 07 am
When it comes to the Badrinath Dham, the final destination of the Chardham Yatra, it is considered the most sacred of the four shrines in this pilgrimage circuit. As mentioned earlier, it is one of the four Chardhams of the country as well. Situated on the left bank of the Alakananda River, the Badrinath Dham is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is considered as the protector and preserver of the the divine Hindu Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). Apart from these important factors, the Badrinath Dham is considered so important in the Chardham Yatra because it is the place where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have attained salvation, thus, getting his freedom from the process of reincarnation. Badrinath Dham located in the state of Uttarakhand is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is also known as Badrinarayan Temple. It is believed that Lord Vishnu rests here for 6 months. This temple was established by sage Adi Shankaracharya. According to many beliefs, Badrinath has also been called the eighth Vaikuntha.
