Kashmir Railways – Banihal to Baramulla Train Tour

Kashmir receives a lot of snowfall every year; there is nothing better than Kashmir to see snowfall. Although there are many tourist places in Kashmir, the train running here is also no less than a tourist attraction. Traveling by this train amidst snowfall or several feet of snow is a different experience. To have such an experience, people either go to America or Europe, but when such a facility is available in India itself, then why not enjoy it in our own country?
What is the Kashmir Railways – Banihal to Baramulla train tour?

The 134 km section from Banihal to Baramulla is called Kashmir Railway. When you reach Banihal in winter, you will be welcomed with snow. There will be a lot of snow on the surrounding mountains and snow will also be seen at Banihal station. If the weather cooperates a bit, you may even get to see live snowfall.

Till now, trains do not run directly to Kashmir from Jammu or Delhi. From Delhi, you can go by train to Jammu, Udhampur, or Katra. After that, you will have to travel to Banihal by road. Beyond Banihal, a railway line is laid till Srinagar and Baramulla and trains run on it.

DMU MU train

Here you will find a red-blue colored DMU MU train standing, which will take you on a tour of Kashmir Valley, that too at very affordable prices. You can reach Srinagar from Banihal for just Rs 45 and Baramulla for just Rs 60. It takes one and a half hours from Banihal to Srinagar and 3 hours to Baramulla. Heaters are also installed in the train coaches and you will not feel cold at all while sitting inside. The entire train is unreserved and no reservation is required. You have to go to the station and buy a general ticket and sit anywhere on the train.

How to Reach

Presently Kashmir Railway starts from Banihal. It is connected by road to Jammu and Udhampur through NH-44. Here you will easily find public transport and taxis. Jammu is well connected by rail to the entire country.

Where to stay?

There are not many accommodation options in Banihal. It is better that you start from Jammu in the morning and reach Banihal by afternoon and after that enjoy Kashmir Railway. In the evening you can go to Srinagar.

When to go?

Kashmir Railway remains operational throughout the year. If you want to see a snow scene then the best time is from December to March. Train service is also stopped due to snowfall. So keep updated about the weather and trains.

Point of attraction

The point of attraction of the Kashmir Railways – Banihal to Baramulla train tour is an 11 km long tunnel.
Banihal is situated just below the Pir Panjal mountains. As soon as the train leaves from here, it enters Banihal Tunnel. This tunnel is built under the Pir Panjal mountains and is 11 km long. On the other side across the tunnel is the open valley of Kashmir. The scenery has completely changed by the time the train reaches Qazigund on the other side. High mountains are replaced by wide valleys and the amount of snow also increases. In winter, you will see white snow everywhere here. It is an overwhelming sight.
The train reaches Srinagar from Qazigund via Anantnag. There are many other small stations on the way and the train stops at all the stations. If you wish, you can go north to Srinagar and go to your hotel or you can also go to Baramulla. Baramulla is the last station of this railway line. Sopore station falls on the way, which is the northernmost station in India. You can also use the train to return from Baramulla to Srinagar.
